Workbook Summary Tà ³nya Harris Liberty University Introduction: Special Education in the Individualized Education Program Special education is a form of instruction that serves to help individual students with disabilities in the classroom, or any other setting that is considered acceptable by the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team. The process used to determine special education starts when either a teacher or a parent makes a referral to have an individual student evaluated to determine if there is a disability. Special education comes at no extra cost to the parents of the student. Gibb and Dyches (2016), mention how students with disabilities ages 3 to 21 must be granted Free Appropriate Public Education (FEPA),â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Gibb and Dyches (2016) state, ââ¬Å"Academic achievement refers to ââ¬Å"gaining requisite skills and knowledge for success in schoolâ⬠(p. 47), and functional performance can be defined as ââ¬Å"applying knowledge and skills to meet daily needsâ⬠(p. 47). Reading, writing, and math are academic achievement skills that are crucial to the students learning because they all are required for other subjects. In contrary, functional performance involves adaptive skills such as feeding and dressing oneself, and meeting appropriate school behaviors. Gibb and Dyches (2016) mention that the PLAAFP statement derives from ââ¬Å"reviewing the curriculum standards for academic achievement, determining the students current academic strengths and limitations, and assessing the students current functional strengths and limitationsâ⬠(p. 48). Measurable Annual Goals Measurable annual goals are used to identify what the individual student is expected to achieve within one year to address what effects the disability has caused. Gibb and Dyches (2016) define the word measurable as ââ¬Å"the behavior stated in the goal can be observed and measured to determine when it has been achievedâ⬠(p. 60).
